2002 Pride Cabernet Sauvignon

2002 Pride Cabernet Sauvignon

So, you just had a bottle of our 2001 Cab and don’t think anything else can measure up? Think again! The 2002 is another powerhouse of a wine; profoundly extracted, opaque in the glass - the pure essence of mountain grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Nearly 100% varietal with just a splash of Petit Verdot, the aroma of ripe black cherry is a near knockout before expansive flavors of cherry and chocolate, cedar and espresso flood the palate. Voluptuous with smooth, fine tannins and an incredible finish, given the proper attention this is a bottle that could last you well into the night.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide: December 2005 - Rating: 91

This impressive, generously filled and very solid young wine is at once both powerful and remarkably well-balanced and delivers loads of optimally ripened, curranty fruit juxtaposed with just the right measure of complementary oak. It is full on the palate and comes complete with lots of Cabernet tannins, but even as astringency crowds in at the finish, its confident fruit refuses to quit. It is not, nor will ever be the picture of elegance, but its stunning depth and keen varietal precision raise great expectations for a most handsome maturity some eight to ten years hence.

  • The Wine Advocate: February 2005, Issue 157 - Rating: 92

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon (5,000 cases made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a supple, flamboyant, and more accessible version of the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with a classic nose of tobacco leaf, black currant, licorice, and smoke, the wine is medium to full bodied, has a supple texture, and attractive textural mouthfeel in addition to a plush, heady finish. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.

  • California Grapevine: February/March 2005 - Rating: 90

Medium-dark purplish ruby; attractive, forward, toasty, red currant aroma with hints of green olive and vanilla; full body; forward, ripe, textured, cedary, concentrated, cherry and red currant flavors; medium-full to full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Enjoyable to taste now as it is developed depth and some complexity with airing in the glass. Very Highly Recommended. 14.5% alcohol; 5,500 cs.

  • Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: May/June, Issue 120 - Rating: 90+

Deep, smoky nose combines currant, graphite, tobacco and leather, plus greener notes of currant leaf and green olive. Quite backward and firmly structured, with flavors of currant and tobacco leaf, mineral, coffee and herbs. Finshes with a light dusting of tannins. The only one of these Pride 2002's that struck me as a bit greenand dry in the sense of traditional Bordeaux. But this is also quite closed and minerally. I'd give it five or six years of additional cellaring.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide: December 2004 - Rating: 94 - 2 puffs

Intensely aromatic and redolent of raspberries, cassis, cocoa and touches of loam, this very rich and powerful young wine follows through with wonderfully concentrated flavors that are every bit as big and fully filled as expected. Although its sheer sense of mass and immediacy will hold it in reasonable stead as a near term partner to meats on the bone, it has the strength and the structure to grow even better with time and deserves a wait of at least five years if not ten.

  • Wine Spectator: November. 15, 2003 - Rating: 95-100

One can only hope this is as delicious after it's bottled. Dark, rich and plush, with gobs of enticing flavors, serving up a mix of chocolate covered currant, mocha, white chocolate, wild berry and pretty toasty oak. Remarkably elegant and complex, with a long finish.
