2021 Reserve Claret

Much of the elegance of our 2021 Reserve Claret is due to the balanced tension between our most intensely flavored merlot and the intriguing depth lent by our Rock Arch clone of cabernet. The merlot brings enticing aromas of violet, mulberry, and sage, while not to be outdone, the cabernet adds pretty notes of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco and Earl Grey tea. On the first sip, the merlot makes itself known with its bright freshness before relenting in the midpalate to rich and velvety tannins from the cabernet. Our Clarets are consistently some of the most delightful wines we make, both at release and with bottle age.

  • Antonio Galloni Vinous: Napa Valley’s 2022 & 2023 Cabernet Sauvignons (Dec 2024) - Rating: 97

The 2021 Reserve Claret is redolent of crushed rocks, iron, white pepper, mint and blood orange, all of which lend notable aromatic presence. Bright acids run through a core of vibrant red-toned fruit as the 2021 opens in the glass. This full-bodied, structured Merlot-based blend packs a pretty serious punch, but it also offers notable freshness and verve to balance things out.

The 2021 Claret Reserve is 66% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Dusty and herbal up front but imbued with deep black cherry fruit, this medium to full-bodied wine is creamy-ripe in texture, dense and concentrated, with a long, lush finish. It's a strong step up in quality from the Merlot and the Merlot Vintner's Select.

As with many wines here, the 2021 Reserve Claret comes from almost equal parts Sonoma and Napa Valley. A bend of 79% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a semi-opaque ruby/plum hue as well as a beautiful, Pomerol-like vibe in its ripe black cherries, currants, leafy herbs, chocolate, and damp earth. With medium-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and beautiful tannins, this classy Merlot benefits from air (and will probably be even better in 2-3 years) and has 15 years of prime drinking ahead of it.

Milk chocolate, mint and maraschino cherry aromas mingle on the nose of this deep, dark and brooding blend of Bordeaux varities from both Sonoma County and Napa Valley. Give this some to soften and it will be a showstopper with hearty stews or lamb chops. —T.R.C. Published 7/1/2024
