2015 Sangiovese

Just five rows of Sangiovese vines, planted to Brunello selections VCR 23 and 102 as well as our own field selection, produce the grapes for this, which at 167 cases produced is our smallest production wine. The grapes were harvested on September 14th, macerated on the skins for ten days, and then gently pressed to neutral oak barrels. After a single racking, the wine was blended with 19% cabernet sauvignon from our Rock Arch vineyard block (also used for our Reserve wines) and 1% petit verdot. The wine expresses beautiful notes of blackberry, black currant, chocolate, floral and subtle herb nuances. It possesses the bright acidity and noticeable tannins that are typical of Sangiovese, but is rounded-out with layers of fruit and a luscious, rich mid-palate. The wine is at an expressive point in its life, though it will continue to unwind and reveal new layers of complexity with additional bottle aging. -- Sally Johnson

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: November 2017 - Rating: 92

Moderately tannic and similarly structured as its somewhat tougher, one-year-older sibling, this deep and impressively stuffed youngster comes with a markedly more generous serving of very articulate, wonderfully sustained, dark cherry fruit. It hints here and there at suggestions of smoke and tar and counts a full complement of rich oak among its many notable gifts, and, if a substantial wine that transcends the typical Chianti model, it is exceptionally well-balanced and an absolute risk-free bet to benefit from five to eight years of additional age.

The 2015 Sangiovese is dark, juicy and pliant. As is often the case, Pride's Sangiovese is not especially varietal, largely because there is a fair amount of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. But if taken on its own terms, Pride's Sangiovese is a very pretty and delicious wine. Bright red cherry, raspberry and floral notes, along with the wine's aromatics, emerge with time in the glass. (Available only in 500ml bottles.)
