2009 Pride Cabernet Sauvignon

2009 Pride Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2009 vintage was a classic one for Cabernet on top of the mountain, producing a wine of pure varietal character, suppleness on the mid-palate and age-worthy structure and intensity. Warm, sunny summer weather met with a cooling period during September that pushed our harvest back to the last two weeks of October and into November, with the last Cabernet grapes harvested on November 3rd. Each of the 11 separate blocks that contribute to this wine were picked and fermented separately and after aging in French oak barrels for 19 months, the final cuvée was assembled in June and bottled in July. Particularly notable in this vintage is that all 11 lots were truly fantastic. Notes of blackberry, ripe plum, black tea, cassis and dark chocolate create an intriguing aromatic interplay, while the opaque, blue-black color, voluptuous mouthfeel and natural acidity balance the wine's mountain tannins, creating a wine with no sharp edges.

Pure and focused, this understated version succeeds with finesse and detail to its dark berry, red currant, mocha and spicy, loamy earth notes. Ends with chewy tannins. Drink now through 2024. 4,987 cases made. –JL

(blended with 11% merlot and 4% petit verdot): Bright, medium ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines blueberry, blackberry, tar, espresso and mint. High-toned and intense in the mouth, with the minty blueberry character and harmonious acidity giving the wine an enticing juicy quality. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and the structure to age well. I'd hold this for at least two or three years before pulling the cork.

  • California Grapevine: February/March 2012 - Rating: 91

Medium-dark ruby color; attractive, initially a bit restrained, spicy, dark cherry and blackberry fruit aroma with hints of casis, black tea, graphite, and dark chocolate; medium-full body; ripe, textured, dark cherry and black fruit flavors with plush richness and notes of vanilla and dried herbs; full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Very highly recommended.

  • The Wine Advocate: December 2012 - Rating: 93

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon flows across the palate with serious depth, power and richness. Dark raspberries, grilled herbs, tobacco, chocolate and licorice are all woven together in a rich, sumptuous wine of notable pedigree. A super-ripe, racy finish supported by firm yet well-integrated tannins rounds things in style. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2028.
