2010 Pride Merlot

2010 Pride Merlot

In 2010, harvest ranged from October 18th for our earliest block of Merlot to November 6th for the latest, with the majority picked during the last eight days of October. The final blend incorporates 10% cabernet sauvignon from our Rock Arch and Carolyn's vineyard blocks.

This wine is not shy: heady notes of bright blue fruit burst forth before even lifting the glass. Blueberry, blackberry and dark black cherry notes saturate the palate, revealing a thick, dense wine with plenty of stuffing and a bit more weight and extraction than our lovely 2009.

Merlot is a grape variety prone to "shatter," or incomplete pollination of its flowers, which is something that actually helps with concentration in the finished wine due to the enhanced exposure of the grape skins to the sun and air.

A light shatter in 2010 due to spring rains, combined with some additional mid-season crop thinning once the shoots stopped growing, made a lighter-than-average crop that was able to ripen to perfection.

  • Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: May/June #168 - Rating: 92

($58) (blended with 10% cabernet sauvignon):  Moderately saturated bright red-ruby.  Sexy aromas of currant, black cherry, chocolate, mocha and brown spices.  At once sweet and precise, with captivating inner-mouth floral perfume to the firm-edged flavors of dark berries, graphite and fresh herbs.  A bit youthfully taut but this is very impressive for a wine made in large quantity (5,300 cases in 2010).  Finishes with lovely verve and the spine for aging.

  • The Wine Advocate: December 2012 - Rating: 90

This year, the 2010 Merlot is the most fragrant and lightest of the entry-level wines at Pride. Sweet red cherries, dried flowers, tobacco and spices all waft from the glass of this delicate, fragrant wine, which is best suited for near and mid-term drinking. The 2010 Merlot is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

  • California Grapevine: September 2013 - Rating: 90

Medium to medium-dark ruby; attractive, forward, spicy, blackberry fruit aroma with hints of cassis, chocolate, and tobacco leaf; medium-full to full body; rich, dense, textured, mouth-filling, black cherry and dark berry fruit flavors; medium-full tannin; lingering aftertaste. Approachable now and should continue to develop with several more years of bottle aging. Very highly recommended.
