2009 Vintner Select Chardonnay

2009 Vintner Select Chardonnay

Our Vintner Select Chardonnay has been undergoing a steady evolution over the past few vintages. With the 2009 offering, the wine is more elegant and restrained, while still remaining a classic representation of the Spring Mountain terroir in which these grapes ripened. Fermentation was in 25% new and 75% neutral French oak barrels. Malolactic fermentation was initiated and then arrested at approximately 50% completion to maintain the natural grape acidity necessary to balance the wine's opulent fruit. Lees stirring was done weekly from December through May to enhance the roundness and structure. This wine is a delight to taste; simultaneously luscious and delicate, displaying classic flavors of pineapple, green apple and melon, with a nearly imperceptible kiss of French oak and a burst of bright acidity.

Full, bright yellow. Opulent aromas of yellow fruits, wild herbs and brown spices. Silky, fruit-driven and sweet, with good balancing energy and spicy lift. Not at all overly ripe: this wine clearly benefited from the cool growing season of 2009. The percentage of new oak for this bottling has been cut from 45% to 30% with this vintage.

  • Wine Enthusiast: August, 2011 - Rating: 93

True to the Pride style, this Chardonnay is massively constructed, with an enormous blast of pineapple, orange and golden mango fruit, elaborated with sweet, smoky, caramelized oak. It's saved from being a mere fruit bomb by crisp acidity and a bracing minerality. Drink now for sheer hedonistic freshness.

  • Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: December 23, 2011 Issue 198 - Rating: 90

The 2009 Chardonnay Vintners Select is a slightly richer, riper wine than the straight Chardonnay but it also has more focus. Here, too, the wine's balance and sense of harmony are terrific for such a large-scaled, opulent Chardonnay. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016
