2016 Chardonnay

The 2016 Napa Valley Chardonnay excites the mouth and mind with a beautiful range of aromas and flavors including dried pear, apricot, narcissus, pastry dough, ginger, lily, mint and rose. The structure displays the pleasing tension between roundness and refreshing crispness that we love in great chardonnay.

The grapes for our Napa Chardonnay, sourced from three vineyards in Carneros that we’ve worked with for many years, were night-harvested on September, the 9th, 12th and 29th. Fermentation was done in French oak barrels, 25% new, and malolactic fermentation was arrested on a barrel-by-barrel basis at approximately 30% completion. After aging on its lees for seven months, it was racked to tank one month prior to being bottled on July 13, 2017. In terms of weather, 2016 was similar to 2012, as determined by a mathematical calculation called “Growing Degree Days” (GDD) that measures the total heat the vines were exposed to by adding up the average daily temperature throughout the growing season. The personality of the wines is reminiscent of 2012 as well. The whites in 2016 are strikingly fresh, with nuanced fruit and lively acidity while the 2016 reds (still aging in barrel) possess roundness, ripeness and size as in 2012.

The 2016 Chardonnay is another terrific white from this estate. Sautéed apples, white flowers, toasty oak, and spice all flow to a rich, medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated white that has good acidity, a fresh, focused style and impressive length.

  • Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: July 2018 - Rating: 91

PRIDE Napa Valley 2016 If a little restrained on first nosing, this very deep, impressively filled offering wastes little time in unfolding and makes a fine aromatic showing with a well-measured mix of plentiful, very precise, ripe apple fruit joined by a judicious dollop of rich oak and builds on its handsome beginnings with deep, wonderfully expressive, insistently fruity flavors that evoke a lovely sense of crafting and winemaking polish. It is at once fairly full-bodied and exceptionally well-balanced with great palatal length, and, even though a layered and entirely satisfying Chardonnay right now, it is an ageworthy version that will gain in complexity over the next three or four years.
