2022 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

The deep-rooted vines of our Rock Arch block of cabernet sauvignon have always made an essential contribution to our Reserve Cabernet each vintage.  Planted in 1982, they have consistently produced gorgeous cabernet, so starting in 2006, we began using them as mother vines as various blocks of cabernet were replanted throughout our vineyards.  In 2022, one of those offspring blocks, Callie’s, produced a wine that was clearly the equal of the best ever made from Rock Arch. Every barrel from the Callie’s block was allocated to the 2022 Reserve Cab.

Aromas of cedar, moist tobacco leaf, and coriander seed are the first indication that this is a wine of savory beauty.  Dense layers of elderberry, mulberry and blackcurrant are next to unfold. The first taste reaffirms the black fruit quality before graphite and crushed stone comes to the forefront. This minerality has the subtle saline quality of crushed oyster shells. The structure is powerful but does not dominate all the other elements. As the long finish winds down, there is a lovely unfurling of leather, tea tree, and cacao notes. Drink it now but be sure to cellar at least a few bottles so you can check in on it frequently over the next 15-20 years.

Brooding aromas of blood plums, blackberry compote, licorice and mocha. The palate is full-bodied with a viscous mouthfeel and fine tannins, giving notes of mulberries, cassia bark, graphite and spices. Very bold and powerful, albeit balanced. Drink or hold.
